(First post. w00t.)

Welcome to sixpackscale, my community for both reviews and recommendations. It's mainly for my own benefit, to keep track of various fanfics that I've read and enjoyed and to organize my thoughts on various movies and such. But, feel free to friend this journal if you'd like...maybe you'll enjoy some of these random things as well.

For those of you that don't know the story, I'm rather well known for using my infamous "six-pack scale" to rate things on. It all started back in college...one of my roommates was Ben Siler, the film critic for our local paper, The Crimson White. He'd go watch every new movie that'd come out, and often took some of his friends with him. Informally he'd ask our opinions, just as much for research as to talk amongst friends. After one particularly bad movie, he asked me how I'd rate it, and I told him that I gave it four beers. With "stars" being the standard, universally accepted rating system, everyone looked at me curious as to what I meant. Elaborating, I told them that it'd take about four beers before I could sit through that shitty movie again. It got a huge laugh...perhaps one of those things where you just had to have been there. After the next movie, another friend asked me how many beers it'd take for that one, and thus the legend was born. It became a running joke that still pops up even today, six long years later.

Since then, I've switched things around a little. Instead of rating how bad a film was, in line with the original joke, I dropped the inverse scale for a more traditional system. Kind of like the "stars" system, the more "beers" the better something is. But I am keeping the 1-to-6 numbering scale because it forces me to decide if something is better or worse than halfway. On a five-star scale, it's far too easy to assign things a middle-of-the-road "three stars (***)" and not think more about it. With no middle ground, I'm forced to decide if something's slightly above or slightly below average. Likewise it also allows me to more accurately describe just how good or bad something is, since I have three possible scores on either side of the halfway mark.

This community is closed for membership, cause it's my personal list of reviews and recommendations. No one will be posting here except for myself. However, commenting is allowed, and you're free to suggest things to me via AIM or by commenting to this original post. Or just friend this community and occasionally get updates of decent fanfics, manga scans, or whatever else I feel like passing along.

Until then, I remain
